Airtel Nigeria Telesonic awarded three telecom licences

Airtel Nigeria Telesonic Limited, the fibre service unit of Airtel Nigeria, has been awarded three telecom licences.
The latest market updates released recently by the Nigerian Communications Commission, stated that the network operator was granted a National Long Distance licence, an Internet Service Provider licence, and a Sales & Installation Major licence.
The National Long Distance licence, which is valid for 20 years, will cover the period from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2044.
Meanwhile, both the Internet Service Provider and Sales & Installation Major licences have a validity of five years, running from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2029, Technology Times reports.
Telesonic is Airtel’s wholesale fibre unit designed to transform Africa’s wholesale data market, and it has invested in the 2Africa submarine cable system.
It is positioned to own Airtel Africa’s fibre assets and submarine cable systems, which total approximately 75,000km of terrestrial fibre across 14 countries.
The move came after Airtel Africa launched a new data centre business, Nxtra, in December 2023, a year after opening a tier 3 data centre in Lagos. The company aims to build one of the largest and high-capacity data centres.
