Coca-Cola expands green footprint with new plastic recycling hub in Lagos

Coca-Cola Nigeria has opened a packaging collection hub in Apapa, Lagos, to boost plastic recycling. In partnership with Nigerian Bottling Company, the facility can process up to 13,000 metric tonnes of plastic bottles annually.
Lagos State and federal officials praised the initiative for tackling plastic pollution and supporting sustainability. Coca-Cola reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria, citing a $1.5 billion economic contribution over the past decade and a planned $1 billion investment. The company aims to increase recycled plastic in packaging and collect up to 75 per cent of bottles and cans by 2035.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Special Adviser on Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, hailed the initiative as a game-changer in tackling plastic pollution. While the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, praised Coca-Cola’s investment, emphasizing its role in boosting economic growth and aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a self-sustaining economy.
It also reaffirmed its deep-rooted presence in Nigeria, highlighting over $1.5 billion in economic contributions over the past decade and a newly announced $1 billion investment plan over the next five years.
Zoran Bogdanovic, CEO of Coca-Cola HBC, described the project as a milestone in responsible business practices.
He stressed that the initiative goes beyond waste reduction by creating job opportunities, empowering local communities, and strengthening the company’s sustainability agenda.
Luisa Ortega, President of Coca-Cola’s Africa Operating Unit, expressed confidence in the company’s future impact in Nigeria. She reiterated plans to explore new recycling models, enhance infrastructure, and collaborate with global and local partners to drive long-term sustainability.
Minister of State for Industry, Sen. John Enoh, applauded the development, calling it a transformative example of how industries can balance profit-making with environmental responsibility. He noted that the hub sets a precedent for corporate sustainability efforts in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector
