MTN secures 10-year renewal of 800MHz spectrum license from NCC

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has received approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to renew its first 800MHz spectrum band license for an additional 10 years. According the information made available to the Nigerian Exchange Limited,the renewed license will take effect from January 2025, and will remain valid until December 31, 2034.
In a related development, the NCC has also granted an extension for MTN Nigeria’s second 800MHz spectrum band license, originally set to expire on December 31, 2030. This extension adds four more years to the license’s validity, aligning its expiration with the first spectrum band on December 31, 2034.
In its corporate announcement, MTN Nigeria stated, “The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the renewal of the Company’s first 800MHz Spectrum band license (Channel 1) for an additional 10 years, running from January 2025, to December 31, 2034.”
The decision to harmonize both licenses is aimed at simplifying the renewal process for future licensing cycles.
Reacting to the NCC’s decision, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, expressed optimism about the development. He remarked, “We are delighted with the renewal and harmonization of our 800MHz spectrum licenses. This provides a robust foundation for the continued expansion of our 4G network, enabling us to meet growing data demands and advance our long-term goals for enhanced connectivity.”
