BAT Kenya gets AWS accreditation

British American Tobacco Kenya plc (BAT Kenya) has been accredited with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification for its environment-friendly facilities.
The Kenyan enterprise is a subsidiary of the world’s most prestigious international tobacco business, British American Tobacco Group.
The AWS accreditation confirms that BAT Kenya has met the global benchmark for responsible water stewardship.
“We are proud to announce that our BAT Kenya manufacturing factory in Nairobi’s Industrial Area is AWS certified! The factory, which is one of BAT’s global manufacturing hubs, underwent a rigorous audit of its water governance programme and after a successful outcome, was issued the prestigious International AWS (Alliance Water Stewardship certification) Core Standard 2.0 in November 2022,” the company announced.
“BAT Kenya has a long and proud history of sustainability achievements, and in line with our evolved purpose to build #ABetterTomorrow, we are moving ourselves from a business where sustainability has been important, to one where it is front and centre in all that we do. As part of BAT’s Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) agenda, BAT Kenya is continually pursuing Good Water Governance (GWG) initiatives under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS).”
Commenting on the AWS Certification, Steve Muli, Environment, Health & Safety Manager for BAT East & Southern Africa Markets said: “This is excellent performance which is in keeping with the high-performance standards that BAT has always been known for. According to Muli, the Nairobi factory has demonstrated exemplary performance in its initiatives towards supporting and preserving key water catchment areas in the county as well as responsible and sustainable use of water in its operations.
This certification comes on the heels of a similar certification of BAT Kenya’s Green Leaf Threshing Plant (GLTP), located in Thika, in 2021, the first AWS certification for BAT’s operations in the East & South African Area.
