The THISDAY Alumni Association has expressed profound grief over the passing of Mr. John Ajayi, Founder and Publisher of Marketing Edge, who died three days ago at the age of 62.

Dr. Tony Onyima, President of the Association, described Ajayi’s death as “a significant blow to the Nigerian Guild of Editors, the Nigerian media, and the Integrated Marketing Communications industry.”

On behalf of the alumni, Dr. Onyima conveyed heartfelt condolences to the management and staff of Marketing Edge. “We share in your grief because we, too, have lost a colleague, a brother, and a shining example of what is possible when talent meets tenacity,” he said.

A Distinguished Career at THISDAY

Mr. Ajayi was an esteemed member of the THISDAY family. During his tenure at THISDAY, he excelled as a Staff Writer and later as a State House Correspondent.

He brought uncommon diligence, depth, and innovation to every assignment. Notably, he anchored the Media Page, a platform that showcased his foresight and commitment to raising industry standards. “We remain proud that part of his illustrious journey was nurtured within the THISDAY newsroom,” Onyima stated.

Building Marketing Edge and Shaping an Industry

Dr. Onyima highlighted Ajayi’s visionary decision in 2003 to establish MARKETING EDGE, a bold move many considered risky at the time.

“From a humble dream, he built a pioneering, multi-channel publication that expanded the frontiers of brand journalism and became the most authoritative voice in Nigeria’s marketing and advertising landscape.

His audacity, industry knowledge, and leadership transformed Marketing Edge into a platform that informed, inspired, and nurtured generations of IMC practitioners,” he said.

Ajayi was more than a publisher; he was “a mentor, a builder of institutions, and a man whose passion for storytelling and strategic communication reshaped an entire sector.”

His establishment of the National Marketing Stakeholders Summit and the Brand & Advertising Excellence Awards demonstrated his enduring commitment to knowledge, innovation, and industry development.

A Legacy of Integrity and Resilience

Despite challenges such as declining print revenues, digital disruption, and industry skepticism, Ajayi remained remarkably resilient. His life story stands as a testament to courage, determination, and the power of conviction.

Throughout his career, he exemplified the highest values of journalism: integrity, curiosity, excellence, and an unwavering belief in the future.

Dr. Onyima prayed that those mourning Ajayi would draw strength from his legacy, comfort from shared memories, and hope from the seeds of excellence he planted—seeds that will continue to flourish for years to come.

“We pray that God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, friends, and the entire professional community the fortitude to bear this immeasurable loss,” he concluded.
