Nigeria we hail … a poetic injustice?
Nigeria we hail! The call was made for compatriots to rise. Today compatriots in their numbers refuse to rise, refuse to stand. This is the Uncle Thomas in us. He reminds us of those who have risen, only to be pushed into the roforofo. He reminds us of those who have spoken, only to be silenced at the sound of a bang.
He tells us, no be this same Nigeria, a land where her people groan under the oppression of her leaders. Where those who ought to serve, dictate and those who ought to build us up, tear us down.But we must refuse to listen to his rants. He might rave and rage to catch our attentions, but we must ignore him. Not because what he says isn’t true but because letting it define us, only ends up limiting us.
That is why we ought to keep pressing on with hope, because the person who plants yam today, does not expect to eat pounded yam the day after. Every good thing takes time. Every great nation started small.
You see, it is each tick of the second that adds up to become years, it is each grain that makes the bag of rice. Just asthese little parts come together to form the whole, each little action we take to push this nation forward adds up and drives us closer to the nation of our dreams.
That is why we must not relent, that is why we must remain hopeful and not let the disappointments we’ve faced as a nation drive us to be apathetic or indifferent towards each other.
As the Union Bank TVC ad, which by the way, has over a million views on YouTube says, what will be left for the children of this nation if we all carry this Uncle Thomas mindset. The truth remains that our pessimism, our indifference and inaction are seeds and it’s our generations unborn who will unfortunately reap the harvest of the seeds we sow today.
So what type of Nigeria do you want your children to see? What will you tell them when they ask why Nigeria is the way she is or ask what you did to make her better. If for no one else but our children, let’s keep striving, believing and sowing the seeds for a better Nigeria.
Don’t be an Uncle Thomas, Nigeria.
