Meet MARKETING EDGE 2020 Awards Night Chairman – George Thorpe
Since he founded MediaReach in 1999, his pace-setting industry leadership remains inspirational to younger generations. George Thorpe is a guru in Nigeria’s marketing communications firmament whose accomplishments in the sector still shine very brightly. His specialties include market segmentation and portfolio strategy development.
Mr Thorpe began his marketing career at Lever Brothers, now Unilever, in February, 1979. He later switched to Pfizer as Marketing Manager in 1982. He was the Managing Director of Sterling Health Nigeria from 1988 to 1995, and later in 1995, he established Market Space, a provider of marketing consultancy and training services.
His brainchild, MediaReach, was established in 1999 as a media independent to set new standards in transparency and accountability. It has since championed a more scientific approach to media planning in Nigeria with the use of audience data and proprietary software. The agency has since become the flagship agency in its category and a consistent industry leader, which also birthed PHD Nigeria, another wave making media agency in the country.
Mr Thorpe was the Chairman of MediaReach from inception until 2015. He has, over the years, been spending most of his time overseeing Market Space with the aim and passion to helping develop capacity and raise the next generation of marketing communications leaders in the country. He is indeed a trustee of posterity.
In his words: “My work experience has been in marketing and general management; my academic interest is in business level strategy. These have honed my entrepreneurial skills and helped me in building a network of businesses. I believe it is the turn of Africa for accelerated growth and development, and that Nigeria should take the lead. My professional goal is to make my marketing and entrepreneurial experience available to business people who are committed to ‘fast-forwarding’ Nigeria and Africa. Lifting millions out of poverty and creating wealth from innovation and productivity require that all hands be on the deck. That is my worthwhile goal.”
