Dotti emerges MTN Y’ello Star Season One winner
MTN Nigeria, the leading network provider and a brand that always keeps its customers meaningfully engaged, has announced Okewola Dotun, who goes by the stage name Dotti, as the winner of the Y’ello Star Season one. The talent show climaxed brilliantly on Sunday, December 13, 2020 amid ceremonial splendour.
It was a tough battle for the judges with contenders such as Freeborn, Caesar, Storm, Gideon and Fay Fay Diamond making it to the final stage of the game.
As the last man standing, Dotti received a cash prize of N5million, a fully furnished house with an in-house studio, a scholarship to attend a summer program at the Berklee College of music among other benefits, while Storm, the first runner up got N3 million and Gideon, the second runner up got N1.5 million respectively.
In the fourth and fifth places were Fay Fay Diamond and Ceaser. The pair won cash prizes of N500, 000 and scholarships to Berklee College each.
In all, the top five contestants were given scholarships to attend Berklee’s 2021 Summer Music Programme in the U.S., while all fourteen of them will be beneficiaries of the online-music training offered by the school.
“This is like an incubation period where Berklee would be giving them a power-packed class on the business of music, which will cover the technical areas needed to be a successful musician.
“To show how high-end this training is, only one Nigerian that we know of has successfully attended Berklee School of Music for such training. When they conclude the training, they would be certified and then be inducted as part of Berklee’s alumni. Indeed, this is a landmark achievement only a few successful musicians in the world have attained,” MTN said.
It was an emotional night, as Freeborn received her first certificate ever as compensation for being such an inspiration. She was among the top five winners who have been qualified to attend the Berklee College 2021 Summer Music programme in the United States, in addition to a consolation prize of ₦ 250,000.
The MTN Y’ello Star project, which was first announced in February by MTN Nigeria, is designed to discover and nurture music talents by empowering them with the relevant practical knowledge and tools to compete on a global scale.
MTN is well known for its support of the Nigerian entertainment industry as the giant telco continues to strive for excellence. To achieve this level of excellence, MTN does surveys on a regular basis to understand the passion points of its consumers.
According to the telco giant, Y’ello Star is one of the investments fully owned by MTN and the company hopes to create more properties of this kind for the sole purpose of talent discovery in Nigeria.
On whether MTN Y’ello Star is a replacement for MTN Project Fame, the organisers noted: “MTN Project Fame achieved commendable success especially in the number of successful musical artistes it helped to produce or nurture. As such, there’s nothing wrong with MTN Y’ello Star aspiring to attain Project Fame’s achievements or even outshine it.
“It’s not for nothing the new show arrived with star in its name. In any case, aspiring and reaching for greater heights is what the contestants should strive for. It’s said that if you aim for the stars, even if you don’t succeed, you may land somewhere in the clouds above the sky.”
