Aviation unions kick against planned airport concession by FG
Aviation workers under the auspices of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) have kicked against the plan by the Federal Government to concession four major airports across the country.
The members of the unions who staged a protest yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, said that the concession was not in the best interest of the workers, adding that the reasons given by the government for the concessioning were not convincing.
The airports to be concessioned are the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Earlier, Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika had said that there was need to concession the airports in order to improve decaying infrastructures as well as boost air traffic and efficiencies that were lacking at the airports.
Sarah Rindas, a member of ATSSSAN said that the unions were against the planned concession, noting that the government had failed to explain the modalities for the exercise.
”What becomes of our salaries and pension when they are sold? Enough is enough. We say no to concession. Our collective resources and life are tied to these airports?.
