Amazon kicks off 2023 with 18,000 layoffs

E-commerce giant Amazon has announced that the company will be laying off 18,000 workers.
The announcement, contained in a memo sent to Amazon staff on Wednesday, revealed that the company would eliminate 18,000 roles, with most of the layoffs coming in the company’s Amazon Stores and People Experience and Technology Solutions divisions.
According to Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy “This year’s review has been more difficult given the uncertain economy and that we’ve hired rapidly over the last several years.”
It should be recalled that in November 2022, Amazon had also cited economic uncertainties after announcing 10,000 job cuts and a pause on new incremental hires in its corporate workforce.
The company had shared: “We’re facing an unusual macro-economic environment, and want to balance our hiring and investments with being thoughtful about this economy. This is not the first time that we’ve faced uncertain and challenging economies in our past. While we have had several years where we’ve expanded our headcount broadly, there have also been several years where we’ve tightened our belt and were more streamlined in how many people we added. With fewer people to hire at this moment, this should give each team an opportunity to further prioritize what matters most to customers and the business, and to be more productive.”
