Advertising regulator approved over seven thousand adverts in 2022

In furtherance of its mandate to ensure strict adherence to the advertising Code of practice, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON has disclosed that it vetted and approved a total of 7,492 adverts in 2022 as part of efforts to deepen the operationalization of the new advertising law.
The detail of this report was made available to MARKETING EDGE by the apex advertising regulatory agency.
According to the agency, investigation is ongoing to ascertain those brands and agencies that contravened the Advertising Standards of Practice, AISOP law, last year. It added that it would not be able to give a precise number of defaulters until investigation is concluded.
The agency revealed that 17 brands selected from 17 categories complied with the statutory code of practice by ensuring that all their campaigns were vetted and approved by the Advertising Standards Panel, ASP, before exposing them to the public.
These brands were recognised and honoured with the most coveted ASP Compliance Award during the National Advertising Conference which held last year in Abuja.
The brands which emerged winners after a critical review of submissions, by SIAO, an audit firm, include, Bajaj Boxer (Automobile), Genesis Restaurant (Restaurant and QSR), Pepsi (Non-Alcoholic), HP (Computer and Electronic), Hollandia Evap Milk (Food and Beverages) MTN (Telecommunications), Ethiopian Airlines (Aviation and Logistics), and Access Bank (Financial Institutions).
Others are, Trophy Lager Beer (Alcoholic and Beverages), Total Energies (Oil and Gas Adverts), U Lesson Mobile App (Education), Emzor Products (Medical and Pharmacy), Udux (Online/Cable TV), Lekki Gardens (Real Estates and Properties), Kuda Bank (Fintech), Bedmate Furniture (Household and Furniture) and Jumia (E-commerce).
Recall that the apex regulatory agency recently unveiled the new advertising law which aims to reposition the advertising industry for growth by eliminating practices that have stifled the business and practice of the profession in the country.
The Director General of the agency, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo had in several meetings with stakeholders stressed the need for practitioners to ensure that advertising and marketing communications materials are vetted and approved by the Advertising Standards Panel, ASP, before exposure.
The advertising regulator who disclosed that the new advertising reforms will be fully implemented this year enjoined stakeholders to adhere to the regulatory standards in the interest of the profession and country at large.
He stressed that defaulters will be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
