It was an evening of recognition for the people who helped build Nigeria’s advertising industry and the organisations carrying its standards forward as the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) hosted the maiden edition of its Special Recognition Awards (ASRA) in Lagos.
Held at the Balmoral Ikeja, the ceremony brought government representatives, industry veterans, corporate brands and agencies together under the theme, “An Evening of Many Honours.”
The occasion connected the industry’s past with its future. Pioneers received recognition for their contributions, while brands and agencies were celebrated for demonstrating that commercial ambition and creative expression can go hand in hand with professional responsibility.
For a council whose stated mission includes promoting responsible advertising and protecting consumers, the awards offered an opportunity to celebrate the people and organisations putting those principles into practice.
The Sectoral Frontrunner Awards went to Professor Osaren Emokpae, Olufunmilayo Onabolu, Chief Simeon Olaghere and Oloye Dotun Okunbanjo.
Recipients of the Industry’s Lifetime Contribution Awards included Dr. Biodun Shobanjo, Chief Ayodele Owoborode, Senator Akin Odunsi, Sir Steve Omojafor, George Thorpe and Chief Babu Akinbobola.
Other industry figures recognised included Ifeayichukwu Moemeke, Sir Chief Olu Falomo, the late Tolulope Ogunkoya, the late Olaniyi Babatunde and Emmanuel Ekunno.
The recognition extended to public service, with the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, receiving special recognition awards.
Together, the presentations reflected the contributions of practitioners, policymakers and organisations to the development of Nigeria’s advertising ecosystem.
Welcoming guests, ARCON Director-General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, said the awards recognised individuals and organisations whose achievements demonstrated professional excellence, ethical conduct and regulatory compliance.
He explained that the occasion was also intended to encourage others whose work could help raise standards across the industry.
For Dr. Fadolapo, recognition was not simply about looking back. It was an invitation to strengthen the values that would shape advertising’s next chapter.
“I am confident that this event will inspire renewed dedication to professionalism, innovation, ethical practice and continuous improvement across the advertising sector.”
He urged stakeholders to see their role in the industry’s development as an ongoing responsibility.
“As we celebrate the remarkable achievements being recognised at this ceremony, I encourage everyone to reflect on the importance of professionalism, uphold the principles of ethical advertising, support the growth of the industry and participate meaningfully in shaping its future.”
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Binyerem Ukaire, commended ARCON for recognising excellence.
He described the relationship between the ministry and the council as a strategic alliance founded on shared purpose and responsibility, rather than merely an administrative arrangement.
“To achieve the progressive future our nation desperately demands, Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, as well as ARCON, must continue to look at fortifying regulatory frameworks, amplifying responsible messaging and aligning our institutional goals with the evolving realities of the creative economy of Nigeria, to which ARCON plays a very critical role.”
The minister highlighted ARCON’s responsibility for protecting public trust, consumer rights and ethical standards while supporting a fair environment for creative businesses.
Addressing the recipients, he encouraged them to treat their awards as motivation for further contributions.
“To all the exceptional awardees, your accomplishments raise the bar for professional excellence, because today we are celebrating excellence. Let this recognition fuel your commitment to building a more disciplined, vibrant, and value-driven advertising industry,” he said.
Beyond individual honours, the Compliance Excellence Awards celebrated brands and their agencies across commercial sectors.
Among the recognised partnerships were Coca-Cola Nigeria and Algorithm in the non-alcoholic category; Moniepoint and mediaReach OMD in fintech; and Chicken Republic and Wild Fusion Digital Marketing in the Hotels, Restaurants and Cafés category.
Other recipients included BetKing and X3M Ideas in betting; HP Computing Nigeria and Brandlife in computers and electronics; Airtel Africa and The Hook Creative Agency in telecommunications; and Jumia and PHD Media Nigeria in e-commerce.
The National Open University of Nigeria and Media Seal were recognised in education, while Lekki Gardens and Rench Agency featured in real estate and property. Pernod Ricard was recognised in alcohol, with GSLC Media listed in aviation.
Chairman of the Advertising Standards Panel, Dr. Emmanuel Agu, said compliance should be understood as a strategic business value, not merely a regulatory obligation.
He identified consumer confidence, brand reputation, fair competition and industry integrity as important benefits of responsible practice.
“This recognition is therefore not just about rewarding those who have complied with established standards, it is about celebrating organisations that have chosen to lead by example, demonstrating that creativity and innovation thrive best within a framework of responsibility, and ethical conduct,” he said.
Chairman of the House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, Hon. Olusola Fatoba, reminded stakeholders that advertising’s influence reaches beyond the sale of products and services.
He called for attention to emerging challenges involving digital content, artificial intelligence, data privacy and consumer protection.
“Truthfulness, transparency, fairness and accountability must therefore remain the foundation of industry. Responsible advertising protects consumers, builds public trust, strengthens brands and enhance the credibility of the profession. Commercial success must never come at the expense of ethical standards and the public interest,” he said.
For ASRA Organising Committee Chairman, Yinka Adebayo, the ceremony reinforced the importance of recognising dedication and encouraging those making meaningful contributions to the profession.
