93 days, 76 dominate AMVCA awards 2016 nominations
Nominees for the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) were revealed on Wednesday by MultiChoice and 93 days dominated with 13 nominations including Best Director, Best Sound Track, Best Editor, Best Picture Editor and Best Overall Movie.
93 Days is a movie centred on the heroic doctors and organizations who put their lives on the line to save the Nigerian citizens from the deadly Ebola virus disease. Directed by Steve Gukas, 93 Days starred Danny Glover, Bimbo Akintola, Somkele Iyamah Idhalama, Bimbo Manuel, Gideon Okeke and a host of other respected movie stars. The movie was produced by Steve Gukas , Bolanle Austen-Peters, Dotun Olakunri, and Pemon Rami.
Pundits are positive that the movie which was screened at international festivals such as the Chicago Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival and even private international government functions such as the screening at the US Department of Health.
Another movie which had a big presence on the nomination night is 76 which came up in 11 categories including Best makeup, Best Sound Track, Best Editor, Best Picture, Best Light Design, Best Cinematography and Best Overall Movie.
Still smarting from the successful of his first movie, 30 Days in Atlanta, which broke the box office record last year and won several awards, Ayo Makun is on track to shine again in this year’s AMVCA award as he garnered five nominations for his new movie Trip to Jamaica. The movie will be competing in the Best Director, Best Light Designs, Best Actor Comedy and Best Movie West Africa categories.
Announcing the nominees was the duo of popular Nigerian actress and TV presenter, Mitchelle Dede, and renowned Kenyan actor, radio presenter and TV host Fareed Khimani during a special live broadcast which aired on all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv.
Other movies like Oloibiri which told the story of the sleepy but historic town of Oloibiri in Bayelsa State, where Nigeria first discovered oil in commercial quantity, hauled eight nominations. Ghana Must go also got six nominations.
Surprisingly, Kunle Afolayan The CEO which got rave reviews during its premiere, only got one nomination (Best Movie in West Africa category), same as the newly released Brother Jekwu by Mike Ezuronye, which is currently in the cinema and said to have grossed N20million in box office earnings so far.
AMVCA is an annual award ceremony organized to recognize outstanding achievements in the film making industry and this is the first time that any movie in the history of AMVCA has received this amount of Nominations.
Voting for the AMVCAs opens from midnight on Wednesday, 14th December 2016 and closes on the 24thFebruary 2017. The full list of nominees can be found on www.africamagic.tv
