Unilever unveils hackathon for creatives in Nigeria, South Africa, others
Global FMCG corporation, Unilever has launched a hackathon tagged “The Youth Power Hacks” which would serve as a platform to seek creative solutions from the youths towards the 2030 Global goals.
The company announced: “The 2030 Global Goals are less than a decade away and achieving them will require huge amounts of imagination as well as effort. In the wake of Covid-19, creative ideas are in greater need than ever. So, where might such inspiration come from?”
In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals known as the Sustainable Development Goals. The goals were launched in view of creating a better world by 2030, by improving sustainability in cities and communities, ending poverty, promoting responsible consumption and production, fighting inequality, addressing the urgency of climate change, and others.
According to Unilever, the hackathon, which will run in six countries including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, India, The Philippines, and Indonesia between February and April 2021, is open to creatives and experts not more than 30 years old.
“Young people have great reserves of energy, imagination, and creativity, as well as a passion for change. The Youth Power Hacks present an opportunity to mine these unique qualities for ideas that can drive forward the Global Goals,” Unilever stated.
Among several other sustainability initiatives launched by Unilever, the company also put its name to an industry-first collaboration which aims to improve the sustainability of coconut farming to protect nature, the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and the communities that depend on it.
The FMCG giant is the oldest and largest producer and marketer of home-care products; the company’s portfolio cuts across various fields including food, beverages, home care, health care, and personal care products available in over 180 countries. The brand’s products include Knorr, St Ives, Surf, Axe, Lipton, Vaseline, and more.
