Unilever to involve shareholders in climate change plans
Unilever has announced that it will subject its climate plans of zero net emissions and elimination of deforestation plans from its supply chain to shareholders’ vote at its annual general meeting, scheduled for the 5th of May, 2021.
The company holds that sustainability plan demands connection between companies and investors.
“Unilever believes that the economy wide shift to net-zero emissions will require a greater and deeper level of engagement between companies and their investors about their climate transition plans,” the company said.
This is coming after Mark Carney, U.N. envoy, lent support to investors’ agitations to force companies to submit their climate change strategies annually for shareholders’ votes, Unilever intends to examine its progress annually starting from 2022 and allows advisory vote triennially.
The idea of Unilever came to fruition in 1923 in Nigeria, where it sells brands such as Lipton tea, Blue Band margarine, Pears baby care goods, Vaseline petroleum jelly, Lux soap, Close Up toothpaste amongst others.
