MTN, Airtel recognised with ‘Industry Sustenance Pioneers’ awards

It was an evening of resounding applause and flashbacks in the history of the Nigeria telecommunications industry, as books of remembrance were opened on key industry players for awards recognitions.
In acknowledgement of outstanding contribution and enormous impacts on the socio-economic growth of Nigeria, leading and pioneering network providers, MTN Nigeria, and Airtel have been honoured with the awards of “Industry Sustenance Pioneers” for leading the revolution and unprecedented move that sky-rocketed Nigeria to be named among the leading market in global Information and Communications Technology (ICT). This was at the just concluded special summit, tagged: 20 years of Telecommunications Revolution in Nigeria, in commemoration of the two decades journey led by the two frontiers in the telecoms sector, MTN and Airtel respectively.
The network pioneers, according to the organisers and host of the summit, COMPACT COMMUNICATIONS, deemed it fit to bestow such awards as ‘Industry Sustenance Pioneers’ for acting as enablers of a number of sustainable goals.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, Chairman, MTN Nigeria & former Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), during his lecture, commending the Y’ello network and its counterpart Airtel reassured them of a continuous friendly atmosphere that is fair, firm and transparent for businesses to thrive. He went down memory-lane, while commending MTN and Airtel for affecting every sector of the economy positively.
“It was almost like yesterday; it is great to know that it is now 20 years since this journey started. The journey to regulate and legalise commenced with the promulgation of the first Nigeria communications in November 1992, and was followed subsequently with the inauguration of the first board of the Nigeria Communications Commission in 1993. As we all know, telecommunications remain a viable tool for development. It is essential transformation that promotes the development of other sectors of the economy. It is indispensable in day to day interaction, in terms of national emergency, natural disasters and many others.”
The telecoms sector, since its inception 20 years ago, has played a greater role in Nigeria’s economic diversification, prominent amongst being Education, Health, Financial Services and Transportation Sectors of the economy.
