LSDP 2052: What’s in it for marketing communications?
By Zion Rufus
As the race to the future of Lagos as Africa’s model mega city intensifies, strengthened by hundreds of strategic plans and concerted efforts, the conceptualization and implementation of key initiatives contained in the Lagos State Development Plan 2052 will in no time, near its fruition.
However, what does it hold for Nigeria’s marketing communications industry?
Amongst a myriad of clearly articulated initiatives planned to guide Lagos’ ambition to becoming a global economic and financial hub that is safe, secure, functional, and prosperous, the Lagos State Development Plan 2052 plan is also built around 4
strategic pillars: a thriving economy, human-centric city, modern infrastructure, and effective governance; all focused on strategic areas for the collective prosperity of every industry that make up the Nigerian economy.
Some of these transformational efforts will directly impact the marketing communications ecosystem through digital transformation, revenue diversification, and investment attractions.
“A plan for Lagosians by Lagosians”, the 30-year development plan will also drive the tech ecosystem value to 10% of the state GDP by making Lagos a preferred destination for investors and innovators; will see the growth of SMEs to 10% of total share of enterprises in line with global peers; leverage Nigeria’s market demand as a base to become the export hub for FMCG manufacturers in West Africa; and lead Lagos to becoming Africa’s international media city for audio-visual and interactive media with Lagos firms generating box office receipts at par with leading global peers.
In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “I am excited by what the LSDP 2052 has to offer our great State. We are committed to planning and strategizing, not just for today, but also for tomorrow. I firmly believe that the future of our great State lies in our own hands, and I assure you that this development plan sets us in the right direction in our continued march towards global prominence and excellence.”
Equally beneficial to the marketing communications industry is the development of a Trade Infrastructure Development Fund to support B2B digital marketplaces, and enable specialized institutions to offer innovative trade finance support to wholesalers.
LSDP 2052 will also see the creation of a pre-acceleration program for women start- ups in early concept stage; definition and setting up of digital fund to finance digitization effort with private sector support; building of a Film academy/institution in the Media City with modern technology, equipment and world-class staff to provide a steady pipeline of trained professionals in the creative sector; and the creation of a database with resources of public info (filming locations, practice centres, companies, associations, creatives, State agencies, job listings etc.) and outline benefits for both government and private actors.
To set plans in motion, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed the Lagos Wealth Fund Bill, and the Lagos State Civil Bill even as he has received approval from the federal government to kick off the construction of the Lekki-Epe airport.
The Lagos State government will also partner with the private sector and the Art and Entertainment industry stakeholders to drive key industry activities to the proposed Media city in Epe, and to as well be a voice on the federal level to champion the agenda ensure there is a conducive environment and level playing field.
