Instagram crosses the 2 billion monthly users’ line
The monthly active users of Instagram worldwide are now more than 2 billion. Instagram achieved this feat even as it faces increasing probe from lawmakers on the one hand, and very stiff competition from TikTok on the other.
According to a report by CNBC, employees, who asked not to be named because they were not authorised to speak on the matter, told the news network that they learned of the 2 billion users’ number in internal conversations. One of them said Instagram reached the figure in October, just about a week before Facebook’s name change to Meta.
Facebook has however shied away from a public declaration of this feat due, probably, to the legislative probe and the negative public image attendant upon it. The last time it disclosed user numbers was June 2018, when the app topped 1 billion MAUs.
Monthly active users (MAU) is a key performance indicator (KPI) used by social networking and other companies to count the number of unique users who visit a site within the past month.
Instagram launched in 2010 and was acquired by Facebook for about $1 billion two years later, as the centerpiece of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s effort to move from the web to mobile has proved a worthy investment as it is the financial cow that will deliver Zuckerberg’s metaverse ambition.
