Breaking Barriers: GTCO’s autism conference 2025 aims for a more equitable society

Consistent with its commitment, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) will launch its annual Autism Conference 2025. This event aims to create awareness and drive meaningful action for individuals with autism. The conference runs from July 15th-16th, with one-on-one consultations from July 17th-19th.

The conference theme is “From Awareness to Action: 15 Years of Advancing Autism Inclusion.” GTCO states this theme reinforces its longstanding commitment to autism advocacy. It highlights the need to move beyond mere awareness. Furthermore, it drives lasting, inclusive change.

The first phase of the autism conference will kick-start at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos. Meanwhile, experts will hold one-on-one family consultations at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, Lagos.

GTCO’s CSR arm, the Orange Ribbon Initiative, organizes the autism conference. It will collaborate with specialists and partner organizations both within and outside Nigeria.

Championing Autism Advocacy and Support

Speaking at the press conference, Oyinade Adegite, Chief Communication Officer, GTCO Plc, explained the initiative’s aim. She stated it advocates for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Moreover, it supports the nurturing families and caregivers. She added that the Orange Ribbon Foundation champions acceptance. It encourages early intervention and advocates for a future where every child can thrive.

Adegite also spoke on the challenges individuals with autism spectrum disorder face. She said: “Sometimes, we ask ourselves what it means to give a voice to those who don’t have one. We must understand and appreciate the unique ways individuals with autism express themselves.”

Expert Insights on Early Intervention

Dr. Grace Bamgboye, Consultant Speech-Language Pathologist, partners with GTCO on autism advocacy. She commended GTCO for its 15-year initiative. “Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) is a truly worthy partner in championing autism awareness,” she said. “Today, we’re seeing clinics help children at a much younger age – sometimes as young as 11 months.” She added that experts will share practical strategies parents can use at home. These strategies support their children with autism. “We strongly encourage parents to attend, as not everyone has access to specialized clinics or professionals,” she noted.

Bamigboye observed that while autism has no known cause, pregnant women and nursing mothers must seek medical help. They should use only prescribed medication. She added that early intervention significantly helps individuals living with autism.

Understanding and Demystifying Autism

Osezusi Bolodeoku, Behaviour Analyst & Founder, FOS ABA Centre Clinic, spoke on early intervention and understanding autism. He said: “This year, we’ll share practical strategies parents can use at home to support their children with autism. Early intervention is crucial. I’ve seen its impact firsthand with my own son. I began working with him at 17 months, and 12 years later, his progress is remarkable. Awareness is essential. However, understanding what autism truly means is equally important. Thanks to GTB, we’re shedding light on autism and providing valuable resources to families.”

Bolodeoku further clarified: “Autism is a neurological condition, not poor parenting or discipline. GTCO has significantly raised awareness and demystified the condition over the years. Due to their efforts, parents, neighbors, and communities are now more informed. Consequently, stigmatization has decreased. GTCO’s initiative is a great step forward. It encourages people to seek help when they notice differences in their child’s behavior.”

Solape Azazi, Behaviour Analyst and Autism Advocate, similarly appreciated GTCO. She thanked them for their continuous support for individuals with autism and their families. “I’m deeply grateful to Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) for their unwavering support and commitment to autism awareness,” she stated. “Today, I’m proud to advocate not just for my son, but for many others navigating similar challenges.”

Conference Activities and International Reach

GTCO has planned a series of thought-provoking events. These aim to celebrate the unique potential of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They also work to break down barriers to a more equitable, accepting society.

The conference will feature various activities. These include lectures, panel discussions, and performances. Organizers design them to showcase the incredible talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. They also facilitate connections and the exchange of ideas about autism spectrum disorder. This includes its causes, management, and support for those affected.

GTCO also revealed international plans. From July 21st to 24th, a workshop and one-on-one family consultation will take place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ghana.
