Access Bank’s Lagos City Marathon comes up February 12
On February 12, 2022, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will join other elite races across the world to return as a full race. The race which featured only the elites last year in the wake of the CIVID-19 pandemic is expected to have about 80,000 to 100,000 runners participate in the full marathon and the 10km fun run.
Yussuf Alli General Manager Access Bank Lagos City Marathon revealed this recently in a statement.
According to him, the World Athletics and Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) are excited that the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will return as a full race.
“I also want to use this medium to assure our numerous runners, especially the 10km fun runners who came to our office or contacted us on the phone, emails, and via our website that on February 12, 2022, we will have a full race and that it will include the 10km race. I appeal to intending runners to step up their training”.
“This is our 7th edition, we are the first marathon in Nigeria to organize a 7th edition. We are also the first race to win a World Athletics Bronze Label in Africa after two editions and the first in the world to win the prestigious Silver Label after four editions,” he explained.
Last year, he pointed out, the World Athletics gave named it the Elite Road Race Label, stressing, “we are one of the most sought after elite races in the world, in terms of prize money we rank among the top 10 in the world and in the number of participants we are top five in the world, I could go and on”.
An Ambulance and medical station will be available approximately 200 meters after each main drink station on the Marathon route at 5km, 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km, 35km, 40km, and at the finish. Medics will also be present at every intermediary station.
Top artiste’ performances and a selection of other activities will be available at the finish point to entertain the participants and supporters. Food and Beverage will also be available there.
The 2021 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City was an elites only race because of Covid-19.
Other elite races like London, Tokyo, and others were also elites only races while many races were cancelled.
But since September 2021 races that were elites only in 2021 or were cancelled have returned as full races with thousands of runners. They include Berlin Marathon, London Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Boston Marathon, and others.
For six years, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has dazzled Lagosians and the rest of the world with an incredible race full of pomp and colors. Often described as one of the biggest marathons in Africa, this event hosts over 100,000 runners in the city of Lagos yearly.
Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2022 10KM Virtual Race is for runners who want to participate but will not be available for the physical race. You can run from any location within and outside Lagos, choose your start and finish and complete your 10KM Virtual Race in 3 days.
