UNILAG students launch “DOVE” electric car
The dream of realising a made in Nigeria electrical car came to life on Wednesday when a group of students at the University of Lagos launched an environment friendly zero vehicle emission electrical car.
Built from locally sourced materials, it has a speed limit of 15 kilometers per hour and has a tabular frame chassis and16-inch diameter tires.
The project, which is called the “DOVE”, was carried out inside Engineering Laboratory of the University of Lagos by six undergraduate students of Mechanical Engineering led by Olusanya Olukoya.
According to Olukoya, all materials used to make the car are locally sourced, adding “All hands are on deck to ensure that the car runs on Nigeria road in a shortest possible time. It’s a very tough journey, very difficult but we thank God that we are able to get to this level.”
He explained that the idea actually came sometimes in February 2014 but that the group did not start working on it until October. “We started in October, took a break in November and continued in March.
The car is designed for zero vehicle emission and because climate change is poised to destroy global economy, making the low income countries start to lose the most, DOVE will run on the road.
“We realise that the current trends for automobile globally is electric, which means in the next 15 years an average car will be powered by electric. There are geniuses also in Nigeria and we think we must be able to come up with something, especially in schools. We are all undergraduates and we felt we have to lay our hands on something. The problem here is lack of fuel and pollution of the environment, which this car will eradicate,” one of the students said.
To the group, DOVE, zero electric emission is what Nigeria needs; DOVE platform will inspire the youths to do more than what they are doing now.
