“The future is mixed reality,” Akinlabi ‘Phisha’ Akinbulumo

Technology is fast leading us into an era where mixed reality becomes a regular part of our lives. This means that the line between what we can touch and feel in the real world, and what we can experience in the digital world, will start to blend together.

Looking into 2024 and beyond, the fusion of the real and the digital promises not just a technological evolution but a redefined human experience, where interaction and innovation harmoniously coexist.

In a recent interview with MARKETING EDGE, Akinlabi Phisha Akinbulumo, a visionary in visual storytelling and brand expertise, sheds light on a future where reality seamlessly intertwines with the digital landscape, asserting that, no matter the extent of digitalization, our inherent desire for sensory experiences will remain unaltered.

At the heart of this perspective is a profound understanding of human nature which reveals a fundamental truth —human beings will always crave interaction, touch, and sensory experiences.

“The future is mixed reality,” Phisha stated,  noting that mixed reality recognizes that, even as the digital world grows, we still want to touch, see, and experience things in the real world.

“Understanding that human beings will always be human beings, our interaction, our interfacing, our contact will never be a thing that will stop. We would always want our touch, our seeing, our experiencing of our senses. We will never not want to experience more than one, two, three senses at the same time,” he said.

Despite the surge in digitalization, our connection to the real world remains unshakable.

As the Visual expert envisions it, the future involves overlaying digital creations onto the real things around us, giving rise to what he terms “mixed reality.”

Painting a vivid picture of mapping experiences in real time, where individuals, through their devices, can see maps overlaid on real-life locations, Phisha also foresees innovation transforming the mundane task of navigation into a dynamic and intuitive process, enhancing our understanding of the world around us.

“For instance, in mapping experiences, individuals can hold up their cameras and witness real-time overlays of maps on actual locations through a certain lens. This innovation promises a more intuitive and dynamic navigation experience, bridging the gap between the physical and digital realms,” he continued.

“What makes this future even more captivating is its application in communication, transforming traditional billboards into interactive mixed reality interfaces. Instead of merely providing information, these billboards become gateways for immediate actions, enabling users to make purchases directly by interacting with the board through their devices.”

Television advertising also undergoes a paradigm shift in this future, allowing viewers to engage with ads in real-time and make direct purchases without redirecting to external platforms. The aim is to streamline the consumer journey, minimizing reliance on third-party places.

…The impact of mixed reality can also be extended into retail, revolutionizing how we shop

According to Phisha, Augmented Reality could let us instantly change the color of clothes or accessories through our devices, providing more control and customization. This immediate gratification, he argued, eliminates the traditional waiting time associated with conventional shopping methods.

However, it is crucial to note that the backbone of these exciting ideas is artificial intelligence.
