Reals Pharmaceutical Ltd donates drugs to states with cholera outbreaks in Nigeria
Reals Pharmaceutical Ltd has taken significant steps to assist states in Nigeria grappling with cholera outbreaks by donating its innovative ready-to-drink Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) known as “Electrorush.” This move comes as the country faces a surge in cholera cases, with over 10,837 suspected cases and 359 deaths reported in 2024 alone, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
In response to the public health crisis, Reals Pharmaceutical Ltd delivered a substantial quantity of Electrorush to some of the affected states in Nigeria, including Ebonyi State, one of the states hardest hit by the outbreak.
The donation is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting public health initiatives in Nigeria, and it aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by cholera. During the donation ceremony at the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health in Abakaliki, Ade Popoola, Group Managing Director of Reals Pharmaceutical Ltd, commended the state government’s efforts in controlling the outbreak and emphasized the importance of rehydration in cholera treatment.
Popoola, who was represented by the company’s business manager, Lucky Nwajei, explained that Electrorush is formulated to provide immediate hydration and assist in recovery during diarrhea episodes, making it an essential tool in managing cholera. He expressed confidence that the product would help in the state’s efforts to reduce the impact of the outbreak. “As a pharmaceutical company that has the people at heart, we know one of the ways to control cholera is through oral rehydration. Electrorush helps in combating this crisis, which is why we have come to donate a substantial quantity to the state government to support their efforts,” he said.
The donation was met with appreciation from the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health. Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, Director of Public Health, acknowledged the urgency of the situation, noting that this year’s cholera outbreak came with unprecedented severity. He praised the ready-to-drink formulation of Electrorush, which eliminates the common issues associated with the improper preparation of traditional ORS, a factor that has often complicated cholera treatment in affected communities. “This product will be immediately shared with the people,” Ebenyi said, expressing gratitude for the timely intervention.
Cholera, an acute intestinal infection spread through contaminated food and water, has been on the rise in Nigeria due to factors such as inadequate sanitation, climate change, and population displacement. The NCDC has reported that children under five are among the most affected by the outbreak. Ebonyi State, alongside other states like Adamawa, Kano, and Borno, has been battling to contain the spread of the disease, which has claimed multiple lives and hospitalized scores of people.
Reals Pharmaceuticals Ltd donation to these affected states is a crucial part of its broader corporate social responsibility efforts to support public health. The company emphasized that its aim is to collaborate with the government to ensure that the donated ORS reaches the communities most affected by cholera. This donation aligns with the ongoing national response efforts led by the NCDC and other stakeholders working to curb the spread of the disease and reduce fatalities.
