In order to expedite the process of entry and minimize the number of individuals waiting at airport gates, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has implemented a tap-to-pay card payment system at Lagos and Abuja airports in collaboration with Paystack.

Contactless Payments for Smoother Access

Launched on August 28 under the name Operation Go Cashless, the system allows drivers to pay airport gate fees by simply tapping a prepaid NFC card. Once tapped, the correct fee is deducted instantly, and the barrier opens. This seamless process eliminates the delays caused by cash handling and improves overall efficiency.

The method makes terminal access easier, ensuring transfers happen faster, safer, and more transparent.

Getting started is simple. Drivers can:

  • Scan a QR code or visit the FAAN website.

  • Register their phone number and confirm with a one-time password.

  • Deposit a minimum of ₦1,000 into a virtual wallet.

  • Link their prepaid card to enable quick, contactless entry.

National Rollout Planned by 2025

The pilot program begins in Lagos and Abuja, but FAAN plans to expand nationwide before the end of 2025. According to Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku, the project forms part of a broader automation drive to digitize parking, toll payments, and lease agreements.

Currently, only 8% of FAAN’s revenue comes from non-aeronautical sources. By adopting digital services, the agency aims to diversify income and strengthen financial sustainability.

Paystack Provides the Infrastructure

As FAAN’s fintech partner, Paystack powers the backend infrastructure. Its services include:

  • Real-time transaction processing.

  • Contactless payment terminals.

  • Secure payments and customer support.

Through this collaboration, FAAN expects to boost efficiency, improve transparency, and increase revenue collection by reducing cash dependency.
