OpenAI appoints Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati as interim CEO

Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, has been appointed as the interim CEO, succeeding Sam Altman, who is departing from his role and the board of directors.
Mira, having been a vital member of the company’s leadership for five years, brings a unique skill set and deep understanding of the company’s values, operations, and business.
Currently overseeing research, product, and safety functions, her extensive experience in AI governance and policy positions her well for this interim leadership role. The board expresses confidence in Mira’s capability to navigate this transition seamlessly while a formal search for a permanent CEO is underway.
Sam Altman’s departure follows a thorough board review, concluding that inconsistent communication hindered the board’s effective functioning, leading to a loss of confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI. The board emphasizes its unwavering commitment to OpenAI’s mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits humanity, acknowledging Sam’s contributions to the organization’s founding and growth.
OpenAI’s board, comprising Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, independent directors Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner, expressed gratitude for Sam’s contributions while emphasizing the need for new leadership. Mira, with her leadership in critical functions, is considered exceptionally qualified to steer OpenAI through this transition.
In the course of this shift, Greg Brockman will step down as chairman of the board but will continue in his role at the company, reporting to the CEO, as OpenAI evolves to embrace a new phase of leadership.
