The Mass, which began at 5:30 p.m., marked the first in a series of events lined up to celebrate the life, values and enduring legacy of the respected media entrepreneur and industry chronicler.

Family, Industry Leaders Gather for Solemn Farewell**

The Requiem Mass drew a broad cross-section of mourners, including members of Ajayi’s immediate and extended family, close friends, colleagues from the Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) industry, parishioners, and well-wishers who came to pay their last respects.

The atmosphere was reflective and deeply emotional, as tributes flowed in honour of a man widely regarded as a principled professional, devoted family man, and committed servant of God.

Clergy Reflect on a Life of Service and Sacrifice

Presiding over the Mass was Reverend Father Dr. David Akala, assisted by Most Reverend Dr. Peter Kayode Odetoyibo and Very Reverend Father Michael Ogbitobu.

In his homily, Reverend Father Dr. Akala offered a heartfelt reflection on the life and character of the late John Ajayi, highlighting qualities that, according to him, distinguished Ajayi among his peers and defined his earthly journey.

He spoke extensively about Ajayi’s unwavering commitment to his family, his parish, and every group or committee he served during his lifetime. According to the priest, Ajayi demonstrated uncommon devotion to the work of God, driven by a deep love for Christ and a sincere concern for the people of God.

A Man Faithful to All, Without Distinction

Reverend Father Dr. Akala noted that Ajayi’s sense of responsibility and compassion transcended boundaries. He recalled how the late publisher extended the same care and dedication to his home parish in Ekiti State, maintaining strong bonds with church members there, just as he did in his immediate community.

The priest further emphasised that Ajayi carried these values into his professional life, treating members of staff at MARKETING EDGE with the same sense of fairness, empathy and respect he showed within his family and church.

According to him, Ajayi’s love for people was boundless, and his responses to situations were often guided by empathy, understanding and an instinctive desire to do what was right.

Truth, Justice and Sacrificial Leadership

Beyond his gentle disposition, the clergy also recalled Ajayi’s forthright nature. He was described as a man who spoke the truth plainly, without malice or compromise, and who never hesitated to correct wrongs when necessary.

Reverend Father Dr. Akala highlighted Ajayi’s willingness to place himself in uncomfortable situations if it meant ensuring fairness and justice for others. He added that Ajayi handled every responsibility entrusted to him with sacrificial commitment, often giving far more than was required.

‘Asiwaju’: A Leader Who Led with Purpose

Also speaking, Most Reverend Dr. Peter Kayode Odetoyibo described the late Ajayi as a man of vision and generosity, whose life was dedicated to lifting others and leading them forward.

He explained that Ajayi’s consistent acts of service, leadership and goodwill earned him the traditional title of Asiwaju, a recognition reserved for individuals who lead others to the front with integrity, courage and good intentions.

According to him, Ajayi’s leadership was not driven by self-interest but by a genuine desire to see people and institutions grow.

Tributes Continue with Night of Honour

The burial activities continue today, Tuesday, January 13, 2026, with a Night of Tributes, scheduled to hold at the Luxury Party Event Center, Abiola Garden Road, beside Adonai Court, Alausa, Ikeja, by 4:00 p.m.
