Elon Musk’s humanoid robot set for 2022 launch
Vehicle manufacturer, Tesla has unveiled Tesla Bot- a humanoid robot prototype which set to launch in 2022 to carry out “boring, repetitious and dangerous” work.
The company’s Chief executive, Elon Musk said the robot will be about 5ft 8inches (1.7m) tall, weigh about 125 pounds (56kg), have a walking gait of 5 miles per hour, and would be able to handle tasks such as attaching bolts to cars with a spanner or picking up groceries at stores.
The robot’s appearance came after a 90-minute presentation at Tesla’s AI Day event detailing some of the artificial intelligence upgrades driving Tesla’s electric vehicles, including the Dojo supercomputer, which helps train cars to navigate city streets without human assistance.
Musk explained: “Basically, if you think about what we’re doing right now with cars, Tesla is arguably the world’s biggest robotics company because our cars are like semi-sentient robots on wheels. With the Full Self-Driving computer which will keep evolving, Dojo, and all the neural nets recognizing the world, understanding how to navigate through the world, it kind of makes sense to put that on to a humanoid form. In the long term I do think there needs to be universal basic income. But not right now because the robot doesn’t work.”
Code-named “Optimus,”the Bot according to Musk is based on the same chips and sensors that Tesla’s cars use for self-driving features. Its features also include a screen where the head is for useful information, autopilot cameras, and it will be able to carry 45 pounds, lift 150 pounds, and humans will be able to run away from the robot or overpower it.
