Cannes Lions makes waves with over €2 Million in donations from 2023 SDG Lions

In a remarkable demonstration of the power of creativity for a cause, Cannes Lions has declared that entry fees from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Lions 2023, amounting to a staggering €267,065, have been channeled towards seven Lion-winning charities globally. This philanthropic initiative stands as a testament to Cannes Lions’ commitment to driving positive change through creativity.
Launched in collaboration with the United Nations in 2018, the SDG Lions celebrate creative endeavors actively contributing to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The funds generated from award entries are directed toward supporting essential projects worldwide, underscoring the Festival’s ongoing dedication to sustainability.
Since 2015, Cannes Lions has contributed over €2 million through the SDG Lions and Glass: The Lion for Change awards combined, marking a significant milestone in the intersection of creativity and global impact. Simon Cook, CEO of LIONS, emphasized the diversity of the Lion-winning nonprofits and their collective impact on various Global Goals. “We hope the donations make a tangible and lasting difference,” he said. Notably, a special donation was made in memory of the late Dan Wieden to Caldera Arts, the arts and environmental charity he co-founded with his family.
The seven Lion-winning charities receiving contributions are: Caldera Arts, Founded by Dan Wieden, this organization focuses on arts and environmental immersion programs, bringing young people with limited opportunities together with creative professionals.
Unseen UK: A Bronze Lion winner for “Ukraine Welcome Text,” Unseen UK aims to transform society’s response to modern slavery.
The Ron Finley Project: Based in South-Central Los Angeles, this project provides access to healthy food options in areas with limited access. The Solar Impulse Foundation: This organization, awarded a Gold SDG Lion, addresses sustainability challenges by identifying clean and profitable solutions.
Others are, SFBO (French-Brazilian Society Of Oncology). A Gold SDG Lion winner for “Dogs Without Borders,” SFBO represents cancer researchers and aims to make healthcare more democratic.
Ukrainian Witness: A Bronze SDG Lion winner for “WikiTruth,” this media project captures real-life stories from the perspective of Ukrainians to depict the reality of war.
Government Of Tuvalu: This island nation in the South Pacific won a Silver SDG Lion for “The First Digital Nation.”
As Cannes Lions continues to bridge the gap between creativity and social impact, these substantial donations reaffirm the festival’s role in driving meaningful change across the globe.
