Shobanjo to build school of Media and Communication studies in OAU
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is on the cusp of moving to a topnotch academic institution in practical teaching by having a school of Media and Communication Studies, courtesy Biodun Shobanjo, the Chairman of Troyka Group, and Nigeria’s leading light in advertising and marketing communications. News of partnering in building a multi-media centre of excellence for the university was made known by Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, VC, OAU, on the occasion of conferring an honorary Doctor of Letters on Shobanjo at the school’s 44th convocation over the weekend.
Shobanjo was honoured alongside Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Dr. Ibukun Awosika and Chairman, Africa Export and Import Bank, Dr. Okechukwu Oramah, who received honorary doctors of Business Administration and Science.
According to Ogunbodede, Troyka Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Shobanjo, will build the school in collaboration with OAU to commence a programme in Media and Communication Studies.
Also speaking on the project, Shobanjo said: “As partners in the project, Troyka Nigeria Limited will be supporting the construction of the Media School, which will also house a television station.”
Recall that Troyka Holding, a one-stop creative communications shop, donated a three-storey building as a multi-media centre of excellence to the University of Lagos in 2014, named after its founder, Biodun Shobanjo.
Media and Communications studies as an academic discipline is interdisciplinary, which encompasses study of the news media, media industries, visual and sound studies, technology studies, art media, media history, global media, and the politics of media.
